Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, as well as Encarna Sanchez. She was an
obsessive performer when she was a kid, and reenacted TV commercials to amuse
the family. However, she decided to focus her attention on dance. After
pursuing classical ballet for nine years in Spain's National Conservatory, she
continued her studies under a group of prominent dancers. She realized her
passion at age 15, when she beat more than 300 contestants in an audition for
an agency for talent. The contract she got secured her roles on Spanish
television shows , as well as music videos. It opened the doors to a promising
career in the world of film. Cruz made her film debut in 1993's The Greek
Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). Then she briefly made an appearance in Framed
(1992) the Timothy Dalton thriller. Her next film, Belle Epoque (1992), was an
Oscar-winning production in which she played one four sisters who were
competing to win the love of the handsome deserter soldier. It also won many
Goyas which is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. She continued to
add more films to her list of credits, growing by three to four per year. Soon
Cruz became the most prominent actress in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997)
(Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director
Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the
same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film
Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none
for Cruz). It was a turning point for her in 1998, when the industry-related
film comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) earned her the award for the Best
Actress Goya. After a few more tries in English-language films her first
international success was the film of Almodovar All About My Mother (1999)
where she played a unchaste, but very well-meaning nun. When the film was
lavishly adorned with awards and accolades, Cruz became highly sought-after
across both sides of the Atlantic. Woman on Top (2000) was her next film. It
was an American comedy about a chef with extraordinary cooking skills, as well
as the dreadful motion sickness. While in America,
