Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay instantly became enthralled after showing her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware by her mother. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of one on the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right out of school. In 1999, she established her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
